Informal Learning as a Studio Practice

Among a wide field of practitioners, students and teachers exploring and reflecting on the current state of and shifts within the educational landscape in architecture, in “CARTHA I 2022: Learning Architecture” Seppe de Blust, Grégoire Farquet and Charlotte Schaeben discuss the Informal Learning Studio. Hosted by NEWROPE and the Chair of Architectural Behaviorology Prof. Momoyo Kaijima in collaboration with the Chair of Cognitive Science Prof. Christoph Hölscher at ETH Zürich, the Informal Learning Studio was carried out in two iterations in 2020.

The ambition for both semesters was to accommodate a hands-on engagement with current educational protocols and the spatial transformation of three specific sites at ETH Zürich. Following an extensive phase of collective research and exchange about the sites, the learnings informed the collective testing out various transformation strategies for each situation. Turning away from conventional review formats of a presentation followed by a jury handing out verdicts on the success of the student’s work, the reviews offered a space to bodily experience the 1:1 interventions on site.
