Designing Moments of Dialogue

In ”The Crit: gta papers 8“, NEWROPE reflects on three years of experimenting with alternative models for the crit – a key moment in architectural education. Rather than a forum for expert judgment, these revised models aim to shift the crit into a dialogue-driven exchange, valuing conversation over assessment.

Typically, the crit unfolds as a ritual with long-established hierarchies, roles and expectations, holding onto a power make-up that often is unreceptive to the nuances in the individual student’s work, processes, and ambitions.

NEWROPE shares three ‘recipes’ that transform the crit from an isolated moment of judgment into a shared space for process-focused dialogue. By centering on open conversation, these new methods enable students and mentors to rethink architectural practice and the habits of its critique, making the crit a collaborative space that adapts more aptly to the subtleties of each project and cultivates a more inclusive, supportive teaching and learning environment.
