Inaugural Lecture - Freek Persyn

We cordially invite you to the inaugural lecture of Prof. Freek Persyn, who was appointed as Full Professor of Architecture and Urban Transformation in 2019 and has been heading the NEWROPE Chair since then.

Due to COVID-related restrictions this official ceremony was delayed and is now combined with the inaugural lecture of Prof. Dr. Silke Langenberg in one event. It will take place on the 20th of October 2021 between 17:15 – 18:15 in the main building of ETH Zurich.

The title of the lecture (Wouldn’t it be nice if architects started dreaming about building less?) was taken from the following opening paragraph of the text that was written for the insert of Design in Dialogue book, which was co-edited by NEWROPE and was published by Ruby Press in May 2021:

“Why do we keep on talking about architecture as the art of construction? Being an architect and designing buildings myself, I know the joy of creating them, and it is easy to love that work when you are close to it. But zooming out and no longer looking at buildings but seeing the built environment, it becomes harder to appreciate the quality of so many buildings, constructions and infrastructure. Often I ask myself the question: wouldn’t it be better if architects started dreaming about building less rather than about building more? And to focus on the built environment instead?”

The lecture will be followed by an informal gathering. There is no RSVP for this event. Please note that a Covid certificate is required to attend the lecture and that face masks are still compulsory in all the event rooms at ETH Zurich.
